The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information. Winners receive a share of $5 million in funding and support from Knight’s network of influential peers and advisors to help advance their ideas.
Throughout 2012, innovators from all industries and countries are invited to participate in three challenge rounds, each with focused topics on emerging trends.
Round 1 - on networks - is closed, and the winners will be announced June 18.
Round 2 - on data - will be open May 31 - June 21. We’re looking for new ways of collecting, understanding, visualizing and helping the public use the large amounts of information generated each day. Winners will be announced in late September.
Details on Round 3 will available later this year.
Anyone, anywhere can apply for the challenge - whether for-profit start-ups or non-profit ventures. For more information on a variety of topics - from guidelines for for-profits, on intellectual property licensing, open source software and more - visit our FAQ.
Establish the BayAreaNewsGroup DigitalCitizen embeddable video-commenting and rating app across MediaNewsGroup network, broadcast and community websites. Add webcammers via Google+Hangout.
There is no ongoing video bridge between online communities and news outlets assuring both wide range and high quality participation, as DigitalCitizen’s app, broadcast innovations, and facilitator-led webinars will provide.
BANG (BayAreaNewsGroup): 560,000 daily circulation; parent MediaNewsGroup serves 2.7 million print and online readers nationwide; DigitalFirst boasts 45 million monthly online users. BANG pioneers engagement through near-daily online community chats with reporters, live-streamed public forums, and community Media Labs. Google+Hangout OnAir allows live webcammers to connect to TV and events.
The DigitalCitizen/BANG project will work because:
•It’s a extension of the 10Questions platform that successfully attracted video postings and ratings in 2008/2010 elections.
•The new DigitalCitizen widget will be embedded on ANY website, transforming online commenters into “Informed Citizens” able to appear on print, radio and TV platforms.
.•Newspapers and radio proved long ago that people can provide reasonable comments; BANG is part of a national network of local/regional news outlets interested in expanding engagement with the DigitalCitizen app.
•Polls show unprecedented disapproval of political processes, and pent-up public demand to be heard; we will tap it nationwide.
• Martin Reynolds, Senior Editor, community engagement, MediaNewsGroup’s BayAreaNewsGroup. Editor-in-chief Oakland Tribune, 2007 – 2011. Co-founder, Maynard Institute / Tribune’s Oakland Voices. Winner, Knight Award for Public Service, Online News Association, 2006.
• Evelyn Messinger, President Internews Interactive, pioneer in innovative media design for television, Internet, multiple platform. Formerly TV news, feature producer at Link TV, CNN, CBS News; documentary producer BBC, PBS, ARTE. Awarded local and national Emmys, Webby, Cine Gold Eagle.
• Joseph Mornin, Network Integration, programmer. Researcher, Berkman Center; Online Director, United Republic.. Former Social Media Director, T. Boone Pickens’s; co-builder, Facebook online voter app.
Digital Citizen has built a new version of the 10Questions app which can be embedded as a page on any website under the host URL. Testing now underway embedding app on Bay Area News Group site, allowing readers to post video and text comments, rate comments by other users. Highly rated comments are played back during live forums. Also built and tested process for integrating video comments gathered from online in studio-based TV programs, mixing prerecorded video comments with live webcammers and studio guests. Early steps integrating broadcast formats with web app use.
If widget succeeds in attracting users:
•International distribution. Adapt for other countries’ elections (eg, Italy 2014).
•Front-loaded development cost means widget operation is relatively cheap. As a non-profit, InterAct can offer MNG or another mass media partner exclusive ownership, or join them to monetize it.
