Knight News Challenge

The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information. Winners receive a share of $5 million in funding and support from Knight’s network of influential peers and advisors to help advance their ideas.

Throughout 2012, innovators from all industries and countries are invited to participate in three challenge rounds, each with focused topics on emerging trends.

Round 1 - on networks - is closed, and the winners will be announced June 18.

Round 2 - on data - will be open May 31 - June 21. We’re looking for new ways of collecting, understanding, visualizing and helping the public use the large amounts of information generated each day. Winners will be announced in late September.

Details on Round 3 will available later this year.

Anyone, anywhere can apply for the challenge - whether for-profit start-ups or non-profit ventures. For more information on a variety of topics - from guidelines for for-profits, on intellectual property licensing, open source software and more - visit our FAQ.

1. What do you propose to do? [20 words]

Implement DREAM:IN USA: a network to capture dreams of diverse individuals across the country, inspiring social and economic development.

2. Is anyone doing something like this now and how is your project different? [30 words]

No one is doing it in the United States; there are chapters in Brazil and India. We will mobilize thousands of individuals and capture American dreams to develop sustainable solutions.

3. Describe the network with which you intend to build or work. [50 words]

Online

We will utilize The Imagination Network ™, DREAM:IN’s online, open source database of dreams and the world’s first digital collection of raw, qualitative data to inspire social change.

Offline

We will build upon DREAM:IN’s international network of experts and educational institutions by replicating its structure within all 50 states.

4. Why will it work? [100 words]

DREAM:IN’s feasibility is demonstrated by its rapid growth and scalability. After initial development in India, methodologies were quickly scaled and implemented throughout Brazil within two years. In India, the project’s first journey covered more than 25,000 km while mobilizing 101 students, capturing 3000 dreams, and inspiring almost 50 sustainable ventures. Online, The Imagination Network ™ will connect people with similar dreams, creating a sense of empowerment and belonging. Through education, collaboration, and inspiration, DREAM:IN relieves the fear of imagination in creating a gateway for communities to imagine a different future.

5. Who is working on it? [100 words]

The DREAM:IN USA team consists of students and faculty from Parsons The New School for Design who represent a spectrum of expertise in design, business, entrepreneurship, and education. Amongst the team are individuals with previous experience with DREAM:IN methodologies. The advising faculty member is co-director of DREAM:IN and one of the leading students was thoroughly engaged in its strategic development. Several faculty members were also involved in DREAM:IN’s first design development conference. Together with DREAM:IN headquarters and other chapters, we will ensure both quality and value creation for DREAM:IN USA.

6. What part of the project have you already built? [100 words]

DREAM:IN USA has already established a team, formed a New School student organization, and integrated DREAM:IN methodologies into two Parsons’ courses. In India, DREAM:IN headquarters have developed an online platform called The Imagination Network ™ striving to break down barriers of geography, language, and social status. The platform enables users to gain research directly from community members and individuals to upload dreams via any video recording device. Dreams then become a source for social innovation, inspiration, research, and education. Currently in the beta stage, plans are to launch the platform before the end of the year.

7. How would you sustain the project after the funding expires? [50 words]

Following the implementation of DREAM:IN to the American public, the success of the venture will draw in supportive corporations and crowd-source donations to provide funding for the future.

Requested amount from Knight News Challenge: $1 million
